Windows Vista SP2 Won’t Boot; Error 0xc0000034: Fix

1 June 2009 @ 2pm

vista_logoSeveral users have encountered an issue wherein they receive the error message “0xc0000034″ followed by some other information (usually specifying a corrupt file) after attempting to install the Windows Vista SP2 update. Generally, this error message is accompanied by an inability to boot the system and a black screen with the aforementioned error message.

WindowsFixUp reader Corus, for instance, writes:

“My anti-virus Bitdefender found 3 trojans named Trojan.Heur and quarantined it. After SP2 finished installing, when attempting to reboot, a black screen came up and Vista would not start up (nothing I’ve tried so far has worked).”

Fix

To fix this issue, you will need to boot from the Windows Vista DVD. Follow these steps:

  1. Boot from the Windows Vista DVD or the Windows Vista recovery disc that was supplied with your computer by inserting it into the drive then restarting (if you don’t have this disc or can’t find it, you can download a replacement here). (Note: if your system does not automatically boot from the Vista disc when it is inserted, you need to change the boot device in BIOS. To do this, boot from the installation disc, insert the disc, then restart, and while the computer is restarting, continually press the appropriate key [F12 on most systems, F1, F2, F10, the Delete (del) key or the Escape (ESC) key on others -- consult your user's manual or perform a Google search for your specific model] then select CD/DVD/CD-RW as the boot drive.)
  2. Choose your language settings and hit “Next”
  3. Click “Repair Your Computer” at the bottom of the screen. This will launch Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
  4. Choose the installed OS to repair, and you will see a list of recovery tools.
  5. Open the command prompt
  6. Enter the following commands, pressing enter after each, to create a Manual System Restore (as discovered by Arun Kumar on the TechNet discussion boards):

    • cd windows\system32\config
    • ren default default.old
    • ren sam sam.old
    • ren security security.old
    • ren software software.old
    • ren system system.old
    • cd regback
    • copy default c:\windows\system32\config
    • copy sam c:\windows\system32\config
    • copy security c:\windows\system32\config
    • copy software c:\windows\system32\config
    • copy system c:\windows\system32\config

  7. Restart your computer, this time booting from the hard disk.
  8. If the problem recurs, repeat the process.

    Hi Everyone,

I had the same problem as above and this is what i did and it worked and i was able to boot back into my Windows Vista. If you have a chance, take out your HDD and hook it up to another machine, then do the steps above and it should work if it is a software problem. Worked like a charm for me.

    Cheers,
    Janis

To get into the Windows Vista recovery disc, all I needed to do was hold down F8 at the beginning of the computer starting up, then choose the Recover option (I’m using a Dell laptop with a Recovery partition).

Followed the directions above (after first using the Dos Command “C:” and hitting enter).

I received the following error code after:
“LogonUI.exe – Ordinal Not Found | The ordinal 2000 could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll”. Clicking Ok each time it came up eventually got past this error.

Following that Windows Explorer and Task Scheduler gave a error message stating that had stopped working. Clicking Close Program each time that came up got past that.

After this, windows Vista never ran Windows Explorer currectly. Thus, there is no desktop or toolbar. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much for these instructions! My computer is fixed! I thought I’d lost all my data!. I also had to use the cd/d c:\ notation for the first command, but everything after that worked amazingly well.

    This worked PERFECTLY for me!

I’m not technical at all. I’m running Vista on a Lenovo T60 and booted up my laptop this morning and had this problem (it was the same corrupt/missing regsitry, but my error read “0xc000014″). I don’t know what or how it happened, but it was fine 8 hours before.

I didn’t even know what version to use, so I burned both and the 32-bit version ended up working for me. The first time I tried to boot from the disk, it didn’t work. I did a full shut-down (instead of a restart) and then it worked!

I’m so happy, because I was really afraid something had gotten seriously fried.

The directions worked perfectly fine. The problem that I have now, is with some applications that fail to initialize. (error 0xc0000135).

    Hi,

Tried this but it doesn’t work! When it says to select which OS I don’t see anything but an empty table and 2 buttons. One saying load drivers and the other just continues to the recovery tool which displays “Operating system: Unknown on (Unknown) Local Disk”

    THanks!

When i enter in the first command cd windows\system32\config it seems to work. but then when i try to enter in the next commands i keep getting the same message
“A duplicate file name exists, or the file cannot be found”

What should I try? I’ve tried these command prompts many times and everytime I restart It just goes to the same screen telling me it failed to boot and ask to choose between “repair” or “start normally”

I just installed Vista SP2 via windows update, after the initial install the machine would not boot, it would get so far and then blue-screen momentarily before crashing and rebooting.

On one of the boots I selected “Safe Mode” (NOT with networking or command prompt), after this the machine booted, got to a screen where the rest of SP2 was installed (with text saying “Installing Spervice Pack: Stage x of 3 – xx% Complete). It ran through this (took a while), then finished booting into windows (safe mode).

After this I restarted the system and tried to start Windows normally – and it worked :)

got the first command to work with
    cd c:\windows\system32\config

after trying the following first then adding c:\ everywhere. None of the following worked at all.? can anyone be more specific?

ren default default.old- the system cannot find file specified.

    ren sam sam.old
    ren security security.old
    ren software software.old
    ren system system.old
    cd regback

Alas – files found, renamed and moved successfully, but now starting Windows in any configuration (Safe Mode/normally/last known good) leads to an endless loop of restarts, directly after the Vista loading screen. System Restore is now bust – ‘cannot find the file specified (0×80070002)’.

Oh well – should be able to retrieve my data at least using another PC and reinstall Vista.
