Windows Vista SP2 Won’t Boot; Error 0xc0000034: Fix
Several users have encountered an issue wherein they receive the error message “0xc0000034″ followed by some other information (usually specifying a corrupt file) after attempting to install the Windows Vista SP2 update. Generally, this error message is accompanied by an inability to boot the system and a black screen with the aforementioned error message.
WindowsFixUp reader Corus, for instance, writes:
“My anti-virus Bitdefender found 3 trojans named Trojan.Heur and quarantined it. After SP2 finished installing, when attempting to reboot, a black screen came up and Vista would not start up (nothing I’ve tried so far has worked).”
Fix
To fix this issue, you will need to boot from the Windows Vista DVD. Follow these steps:
- Boot from the Windows Vista DVD or the Windows Vista recovery disc that was supplied with your computer by inserting it into the drive then restarting (if you don’t have this disc or can’t find it, you can download a replacement here). (Note: if your system does not automatically boot from the Vista disc when it is inserted, you need to change the boot device in BIOS. To do this, boot from the installation disc, insert the disc, then restart, and while the computer is restarting, continually press the appropriate key [F12 on most systems, F1, F2, F10, the Delete (del) key or the Escape (ESC) key on others -- consult your user's manual or perform a Google search for your specific model] then select CD/DVD/CD-RW as the boot drive.)
- Choose your language settings and hit “Next”
- Click “Repair Your Computer” at the bottom of the screen. This will launch Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
- Choose the installed OS to repair, and you will see a list of recovery tools.
- Open the command prompt
- Enter the following commands, pressing enter after each, to create a Manual System Restore (as discovered by Arun Kumar on the TechNet discussion boards):
- cd windows\system32\config
- ren default default.old
- ren sam sam.old
- ren security security.old
- ren software software.old
- ren system system.old
- cd regback
- copy default c:\windows\system32\config
- copy sam c:\windows\system32\config
- copy security c:\windows\system32\config
- copy software c:\windows\system32\config
- copy system c:\windows\system32\config
- Restart your computer, this time booting from the hard disk.
If the problem recurs, repeat the process.

Many thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S
re C:
try placing cd with cd /d c:\windows\system32\config
Hi Everyone,
I had the same problem as above and this is what i did and it worked and i was able to boot back into my Windows Vista. If you have a chance, take out your HDD and hook it up to another machine, then do the steps above and it should work if it is a software problem. Worked like a charm for me.
Cheers,
Janis
To get into the Windows Vista recovery disc, all I needed to do was hold down F8 at the beginning of the computer starting up, then choose the Recover option (I’m using a Dell laptop with a Recovery partition).
Followed the directions above (after first using the Dos Command “C:” and hitting enter).
I received the following error code after:
“LogonUI.exe – Ordinal Not Found | The ordinal 2000 could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll”. Clicking Ok each time it came up eventually got past this error.
Following that Windows Explorer and Task Scheduler gave a error message stating that had stopped working. Clicking Close Program each time that came up got past that.
After this, windows Vista never ran Windows Explorer currectly. Thus, there is no desktop or toolbar. Any suggestions?
It worked, I don’t know how to thank you!!!!!!
I had the same problem and it worked for me!
Thanks so much for these instructions! My computer is fixed! I thought I’d lost all my data!. I also had to use the cd/d c:\ notation for the first command, but everything after that worked amazingly well.
What do we do if wen we type ren default default.old or any other “ren” command, it says the file is being used by another process?
I have downloaded the boot disc but cannot get my acer aspire 5920 to boot from it. pressed F2 boot sequence is HD first then DVD drive, but cannot change sequence. Can anyone advise/help please.
the Vista service pack is running for almost 14 hours now
the window of “startup repair is checking your system for problems…
should it still be doing this…or is the proram computer stuck?
help
This did the trick! Hope it works for you too!
Had a problem with a HP Pavilion Notebook after an automatic update of SP2. It wouldn’t boot anymore. Thanks for these instructions, they fixed it!
This worked PERFECTLY for me!
I’m not technical at all. I’m running Vista on a Lenovo T60 and booted up my laptop this morning and had this problem (it was the same corrupt/missing regsitry, but my error read “0xc000014″). I don’t know what or how it happened, but it was fine 8 hours before.
I didn’t even know what version to use, so I burned both and the 32-bit version ended up working for me. The first time I tried to boot from the disk, it didn’t work. I did a full shut-down (instead of a restart) and then it worked!
I’m so happy, because I was really afraid something had gotten seriously fried.
The directions worked perfectly fine. The problem that I have now, is with some applications that fail to initialize. (error 0xc0000135).
Hi,
Tried this but it doesn’t work! When it says to select which OS I don’t see anything but an empty table and 2 buttons. One saying load drivers and the other just continues to the recovery tool which displays “Operating system: Unknown on (Unknown) Local Disk”
THanks!
I Love You Man!! THis was perfect
When i enter in the first command cd windows\system32\config it seems to work. but then when i try to enter in the next commands i keep getting the same message
“A duplicate file name exists, or the file cannot be found”
What should I try? I’ve tried these command prompts many times and everytime I restart It just goes to the same screen telling me it failed to boot and ask to choose between “repair” or “start normally”
running vista home prem and using the home prem disk
i tried all the suggestions here and all others i found everywhere…..nothing worked. just before i was about to format and start again i got a copy of vista ultimate and let it do a start up repair in under 5 mins my system was up and running. ultimate obviously has better repair tools!
I just installed Vista SP2 via windows update, after the initial install the machine would not boot, it would get so far and then blue-screen momentarily before crashing and rebooting.
On one of the boots I selected “Safe Mode” (NOT with networking or command prompt), after this the machine booted, got to a screen where the rest of SP2 was installed (with text saying “Installing Spervice Pack: Stage x of 3 – xx% Complete). It ran through this (took a while), then finished booting into windows (safe mode).
After this I restarted the system and tried to start Windows normally – and it worked
OMG OMG OMG – It worked. Thank you thank you thank you! I thought I’d have to restore to factory image….but thanks to you – I’m up and running. I LOVE you. You should go work at MS and show them how to write online help because anything THEY provided was crap!
Thanks for this, worked like a charm
Hey, do u know if this works if i boot Windows recovery from removable device, my DVD drive is broken. Thank you, fran.
Excellent! This saved me a great deal of trouble.
Thank you!
got the first command to work with
cd c:\windows\system32\config
after trying the following first then adding c:\ everywhere. None of the following worked at all.? can anyone be more specific?
ren default default.old- the system cannot find file specified.
ren sam sam.old
ren security security.old
ren software software.old
ren system system.old
cd regback
Alas – files found, renamed and moved successfully, but now starting Windows in any configuration (Safe Mode/normally/last known good) leads to an endless loop of restarts, directly after the Vista loading screen. System Restore is now bust – ‘cannot find the file specified (0×80070002)’.
Oh well – should be able to retrieve my data at least using another PC and reinstall Vista.
What do we do if wen we type ren default default.old or any other “ren” command, it says the file is being used by another process?
Hi can anyone help me with this?
What do we do if wen we type ren default default.old or any other “ren” command, it says the file is being used by another process?
haha…never mind! I think I got it.
Just have to change X:\ to C:\
and the way to do that is C:
will it delete all my files i have important stuff on it i dunt want it to be gone
i have no backup of these files
This is brilliant! Worked like magic today on a client’s Compaq laptop that had a failed Vista SP2 installation with the black screen. Thanks!!
I have the same problem as Sarra , i did everything and it worked, well i thought, the system is restaring frequently after building up the desktop,i cant even move the arrow, what can i do know?
Solved it, somehow:
at the beginning i pressed F8 and tried the different start modes like save mode, one of them prevented the system to restart, but the mouse and keyboard didnt worked, so after a while, on one of the other modes I pulled a USB-mouse in.
And it worked, keyboard still doesnt works but at least i can save my important files and install the system new
Thanks for the great advice…I have been working on trying to fix this for 3 days and this finally helped me get to a place where I can get to my desktop. I’m still having some system issues, but I plan to re-install. I’m just happy I can get to my files.
Thank you, this worked. I hate when my computer doesn’t work. I take it personally. Love you.
G33z!!
my com (laptop) keeps bugging me “important update is ready to install…” (SP2) or what ever the msg was. since i also have this other bugging problem (Wireless network, signal issues) with my com or is it vista, i cant tell since its the only com running vista (presumably its vista), so i decided to install this “important update” vista SP2, which one would assume should fix errors associated to SP1 or otherwise improve system performance in general. However, that was a HUGE mistake thanks to the installation of MS Window Vista SP2, my computer now runs in an endless loop with a slight glimse of the “blue screen of death”, even after i tried to restore the com from the restored point it created before the installation (and used up) but with no result.
only to find out that there are a huge no. of people having the same propblem.
hence i found this link and tried to follow the instruction by Arun Kumar, but come to a problem as Cory and Steven (25th feb 10)…
… X:\> windows\system32\config\ren default default.old => “the process cannot access file because it is being used by another process”
my command prompt has an X:\ windows\system32\ instead of C:\ …
i tried to change the dir to “C:\” by “X:\>cd C:\” but didnt work.
any suggestions? thanks
*** by the way i dont have a recovery disc, but after starting the com and pressing “del” i arrived at “Windows Boot Manager” pressed F8 for advanced option come to “advanced boot options” its has a variety of options first being
- repair your computer
(since i have this option, does it mean that i dont need the recovery disc? its build in or something?)
- safe mode (x3)
- enable boot logging
- last known good conf (tried it dont work)
- dir services restore mode …etc
Choose repair your computer and arrived at “system recovery options”, is this the same as the “WinRE” in ponit number 3 under “FIX” ?
logged in as admin and was given the choice of the following:
- startup repair
- sysrem restore (no restore pt)
- windows complete pc restore
- win mem diagnostinc tool
- command prompt (used to tried out those commands but got stuck at ren default => processed used by another
……………..
ps. sorry about this lengthy msg, i look forward to any positive reply to this problem,
regards
btw I found a good Windows Boot CD, works nicely and is easy to use
helpful stuff, thank you. myself I have just found this cool CD for booting Windows, testing it right now.
Thank you so much! Thought my PC would be a write-off or best-case scenario I would lose all my files but it worked perfectly! I had to change the first command to cd /d c:\windows\system32\config as above and then did everything else and like magic it’s fixed!
Thanks mate… you saved me
My last windows system running on this crapy vista has the same problems the second time. Why my last windows system? Because I have changed all my home and office computers to mac or macbook and found they are no such annoying problems since 3 years ago. I still struggling how to resolve this vista problem. I may have to just dumped the machine and forget about windows computing environment.
Perfect help man !
If you stuck in a endless “attempts repair” try this:
1. Boot up with Vista install disc Starting up without the disc should be fine, but if you don’t have it, skip to step 4
2. Select the necessary options and hit Next
3. Hit Next again once I had the OS selected
4. Then it went to searching for problems…
At this point, quickly press Escape or click Cancel – time is of the essence here.
5. Then it came up with a box to say Restore or Cancel. (Usually I would hit restore and it would just say attempting repairs forever)
6. Instead, hit cancel, and it will come up with saying it couldn’t fix the issue.
7. At the bottom there are 2 options, “View log of diagnostics” or “View Advanced Options” (hit the second one)
8. This brings up that menu that you should’ve gotten even if you hit restore. From here you can choose to either restore, complete pc restore, etc.
This worked for me. After this I used the commands located above and damn, it works (no thanks to microsoft
)
Thanks!
I just followed the instructions as listed above and I want to thank you for the great help, for it worked without any hiccups. I had tried every boot mode, over 16 restore points without any success, but this worked perfectly.
Again, my thanks to all of you.
I did the described procedure once (with ‘cd /d C;\windows\system32\config’ as first command). Everything went OK, but afterwards it still wouldn’t boot. As the explanation says, I repeated the procedure. But when I typed the command ‘ren default default.old’ again, the command prompt give me ‘A duplicate file name exists, or the file cannot be found’. What should I do?
Thank in advance!
