Speeding Up Internet Explorer 8

24 March 2009 @ 9am

Several users have reported significantly slower performance under Internet Explorer 8, particularly when the browser is first launched or when navigating to new pages. Delays of up to 30 seconds or more have been reported.

ie_logo

The problem, in most cases, is the presence of IE restricted sites and enhanced security configuration zones, which are generally created automatically by spyware removal software, such as Spybot and IESpyAd. Traditionally, the presence of these entries has been hugely beneficial, offering protection against malicious software. However, Internet Explorer 8 includes new security measures that may obviate the need for these entries, and the browser can suffer a tremendous speed hit in their presence.

The fastest and easiest way to remove these entries and dramatically increase Internet Explorer 8’s speed is to use the DelDomains package. Right click on this link and save the file to your desktop. Next, right-click on the downloaded file (DelDomains.inf) and select “Install.” The package will remove all Internet Explorer restricted sites, enhanced security configuration zones and trusted sites.

Alternatively, or in addition to the above fix, you can try registering actxprxy.dll, a process that has improved Internet Explorer 8’s performance for a handful of users.

Click the Start button then search for “CMD.” Right-click cmd.exe and select “Run as Administrator,” then type regsvr32 actxprxy.dll and press return. Quit then re-launch Internet Explorer 8 and check for improved performance.

I used the linked file, DelDomains.inf, on a machine with fully updated Windows Vista Home Premium and Internet Explorer 8 production version, and it solved the slow IE8 startup. 2009-03-24.

Until now IE8 opens in a few seconds. Now in half a second. If I need more screens I always open the program separate more times. Also the separate screens opens in half a second now. Faster as IE7.
A GREAT, GOLDEN tip.

OMG, thanks so much. I have been struggling with this problem with IE8 ever since installing it. Not only would IE8 hang for up to 15 seconds, it was causing other programs that access the internet to hang, e.g. Malwarebytes would hang for 15 seconds when updating before it actually updated. It works perfectly now after removing all of the restricted sites. I love you.

Although this solves some start up and browsing issues, it doesn’t solve the sluggishness of the IE8 UI, that can be solved with a different method.
Start>search “CMD”>Right click cmd.exe and click “Run as Administrator”>type (without quotes) “regsvr32 actxprxy.dll”.

actxprxy.dll is a file that’s supposed to be registered in the registry during the installation but for some reason is commonly left behind, re-registering it has no benefits but also no cons, so you really have nothing to lose by trying it. IE8 has a hard time working at all without it. These instructions are for Vista/Win7 only btw.

This tweak removes all of the restricted sites/domain names that SpyBot, Ad-Aware, etc., store in IE to prevent access to them by the browser. That is why you use those programs. There are thousands of names and it takes a bit to load them into memory.
If you run this tweak then be sure that you Turn ON the SmartScreen filter under Tools in IE8. A good discussion about it is here http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/03/25/ie8-security-part-ix-anti-malware-protection-with-ie8-s-smartscreen-filter.aspx :( sorry, can’t figure out how to do a hyperlink in here).
It will take a big leap of faith to bypass SpyBOT and Ad-Aware … I have used them for years.

DelDomains worked great. I had previously tried registering actxprxy.dll, but that didn’t do anything. I’m running Dell D520 laptop with XP SP3; Spybot; COMODO; ESET NOD32. I had previously tried IE8 and because of the speed issue, went back to IE7. Now, IE8 is right up there with IE7 — I guess I’ll keep IE8.

Hey guys. Great web site, and simple solution – but for me, it did not work. I tried both options described (installing the INF and running the command prompt option). IE 8.0 still takes about 15 seconds to load (same as before), and same to open a new tab or new window. Any other thoughts? Would love to be a test case. I run Vista, all updates are current. I use Firefox currently, because IE 8.0 is SO SLOW. I ran 7.0 before, and it worked like a charm. Also, noticed 8.0 doesn’t often recognize Adobe Flash is installed. It is, and works fine at the Adobe site, but most sites say it is not installed. The same sites work fine in Firefox.

This cleared up my problems.

Note however that Firefox is still faster…..

IE 8 install had some very unexpected effects on two XP pro machines. It slowed the speed at which all windows on my system close, not just IE. Now when I close any window it does not just disapeare from the screen. It fades line by line from top to bottom, the way windows used to close on the most ancient slow PCs. It does not take long about a second but that is forever in terms a screen video artifact. Has anyone seen this issue?

It has never been used to rescue any systems that I have worked on. I do everything else. The issue with IE 8 is tis, as of the time of this post there have been reports of IE 8 running very slow after installing Spybot. This seems to be due to new security features installed with IE 8 that overlap the ones in the Immunization feature of Spybot. This is easily remedy by following the instructions found here. [...]

I thought this was going to be another thing to “F” up my computer…this joint works!!!!

The DelDomains.inf file download thing worked out best for me.

Everything is working the way IE 6 and 7 was in terms of speed.

They need to update IE 8 with this fix and stop having people think that the slowness is just their computer or ISP.

I am on cable modem and before couldn’t believe how slow my web pages were loading that I called Time Warner pissed off at them (Sorry ’bout that guys, Road Runner still rocks!)

I can’t thank you guys enough for having a solution that actually works and the results pretty much immediate.

Take care!

Listo!
